XFL has suspended its season

The XFL picked a great spring to start its league.

The new soccer league was doing pretty well, at least compared to other newly formed professional soccer leagues, and then COVID-19 happened. The XFL, like most other sports organizations, paused its 2020 season on Thursday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The official announcement was made on Thursday evening.

The optimistic words about the 2021 season are positive for fans of the new league.

The XFL took a long time to announce the suspension of the season, long after other leagues canceled games. That led to so many jokes about XFL boss Vince McMahon taking over the sports world while all other leagues were on hiatus that McMahon was trending on Twitter. But the XFL was unable to continue its games during the outbreak.

The league had played half of its regular season schedule. The playoff semifinals were scheduled to take place April 18-19, with the first championship game on April 26. Like everything else in the sports world, no one knows when or if the XFL will resume.

The XFL had already decided to play this week’s Los Angeles-Seattle game without fans.

As with the NBA and college basketball, playing XFL games in an empty stadium turned out not to be a viable option.

Houston Roughnecks quarterback PJ Walker, the league’s first star in its first season, summed up the sentiments of XFL news and the sports world in general.

Seattle Dragons receiver Keenan Reynolds also responded to the news.

The XFL had a positive season with solid television ratings and good viewership, particularly in Seattle and St. Louis. Unlike other leagues like the Alliance of American Football and the premier XFL, the XFL started 2020 with positive reviews and mostly maintained momentum.

Undeniably, the pause is hurting the new league from a business perspective. Like the rest of the sports world, XFL players, coaches and staff will just have to wait and see what happens next.
