THIS HAPPENED NEAR FLORIDA AVENUE AND WASHINGTON STREET, AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND BOB HAZEN OF WESH 2 THIS MORNING. Bob police have been on the scene for eight hours now. Yes, TAHLEQUAH, but it looks like they’re starting to wrap up that part of the investigation. YOU HAVE A LOT OF FACT ASSIGNED HERE. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW. MANY detectives also left, but we can tell you that this was a very active scene all morning as police tried to determine exactly what led to this shooting. AND I WANT TO SHOW YOU A VIDEO FROM THIS MORNING. This shooting itself took place around midnight. According to Palm Bay Police, they were called to a building along FLORIDA AVENUE to the northeast of WASHINGTON STREET. There appears to be some kind of shop on the corner of these two streets. AND THERE WAS A VICTIM ON THE GROUND. They had been called here for a reported shooting. They found this person on the ground who was pronounced dead at the scene and was brought here from the scene about an hour and a half ago for further investigation. WE KNOW THAT, ACCORDING TO FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WERE AT THE SCENE, THIS IS A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED. THEY SAY HE WAS GOING TO SCHOOL AND GETTING A JOB AND TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING IN LIFE, BUT GOT SHOT AGAIN LAST NIGHT AND WE TALKED TO THE YOUNG MAN’S GRANDMOTHER ABOUT HOW THE FAMILY WAS TREATING THIS. It’s simply stunning. We’re still trying to come to terms with everything that’s going on, my daughter, my granddaughters, my son. WE ARE BECAUSE WE’RE BASICALLY JUST AN INTRODUCED FAMILY AND IT’S JUST: WOW, HOW? And at this time, Palm Bay police have not confirmed the name of the person killed. Therefore we do not currently use this name. They also have not said whether they have any suspects at this time who they know could be involved in this shooting or what led up to it. But as we learn more about these details throughout the morning, we will share them with you. LIVE IN PALM BAY, BOB HAZEN WESH REPORTS TWO NEWS. FIRE crews in VOLUSIA County are still working to extinguish a brush fire that broke out early yesterday evening. WESH 2’S TONY ATKINS REPORTS FROM PORT ORANGE WHERE THESE CREWS ARE BEGIN TO MAKE PROGRESS. FIRE crews here in VOLUSIA County are getting closer to containing this fire at this location. THEY SAY THE FIRE IS 90% CONTAINED. I want to show you a video that we got yesterday. We were able to hear from onlookers sending us videos as these flames spread through trees and other bushes in the area. Officials say this fire started around 6 p.m. last night and at one point spanned 40 acres. The fire closed Williamson Boulevard for hours, but it reopened at 11:00 last night. VOLUSIA COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS. They urged commuters to be careful while transiting. Officials also say smoke will be visible here for the next few days. THEY ADD THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THIS FIRE. IN VOLUSIA COUNTY, TONY ATKINS REPORTS WESH TWO NEWS, ORANGE COUNTY INVESTIGATORS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED IN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING A SHOOTING VICTIM. CHOPPER TWO WAS AT SOUTH POWER DRIVE AND OLD WINTER GARDEN ROAD YESTERDAY. One of the passengers in one of the vehicles was shot. That person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING. WHAT? We’re learning new details this week about the moments that led to a deadly shooting in Port Orange. Court documents show the person who was shot and killed, 53-year-old Elmer Zelaya, showed up at his girlfriend’s house. Now she told investigators that he snatched the keys from her and then went into her house, where the suspected shooter, the father of Santiago Hernandez Castro, was staying. Neighbors say they heard a fight. I heard screams and screams, and now I heard gunshots. HOW MANY SHOTS DO YOU THINK? BANG BANG BANG. POLICE SAID ELMER HAD A SPEAKER AND BEGAN TO HIT HERNANDEZ. He then allegedly punched the shooter and smashed the windshield of his car. POLICE SAID WHEN HERNANDEZ FIRED SEVERAL SHOTS, ELMER WAS SOME METERS AWAY AND APPEARED TO WALK AWAY FROM HERNANDEZ, UNARMED. He died from his injuries. HERNANDEZ IS NOW CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND HE IS IN PRISON. THIS MORNING WITHOUT BOND. The security guard who shot one of the shooters at Cabana Live in Sanford says it was pure instinct. BJ BROOKLYN SAYS HE HAS WORKED IN SECURITY FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS AND HAS SEEN FIGHTS OFTEN, BUT NOTHING LIKE WHAT HAPPENED AT CABANA LIV BEFORE. Security video shows Brookings disarming and knocking down one of the shooters. NOW, HE SAYS, As soon as he saw this fight from across the pool, he rushed over and got there just as he was driving out. Um, and it was just timing, hoping he doesn’t turn around or face me, especially with the gun. But I was able to sit on the right side of him where he had the gun in his hand and just hack the gun out of his hand. Well, this shooting isn’t stopping Brookings from doing its job. He still works at Cabana Live. The 16-year-old suspect in this case is expected to be back in court on Monday. The sheriff’s office is still searching for the other shooter in Okaloosa County. NEWLY RELEASED BODY CAMERA VIDEO SHOWS WHAT HAPPENED AS A DEPUTY RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A DISRUPTION BEFORE SHOOTING AND KILLING AN AIRMAN. As NBC’s SAM BROCK explains, his family’s attorney says the deputy went to the wrong door. We would like to warn you that the video may be difficult to watch. IN THE MOMENTS BEFORE SENIOR AIRMAN ROGER FORTSON IS FATALLY SHOT BY POLICE, AN OKALOOSA SHERIFF’S DEPUTY KNOCKS ON HIS APARTMENT DOOR. Sheriff’s Office, open the door. Identified twice. SHERIFF FORTSON opens the door with a gun at his side but not visibly raised, and a second later. Six shots are fired, killing the 23-year-old. Officials say the deputy responded in self-defense after encountering a 23-year-old man armed with a gun and after the deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer, he fired into the air. My baby was shot. He was shot six times. Officers said they responded to a disturbance call at Apartment 1401, which is Fersen’s unit. ARE YOU FIGHTING OR SOMETHING? I’m saying it’s common. A woman seen on camera when a deputy first arrived said she also heard disturbances weeks earlier but could not confirm where it was coming from. Shut up like you do, stupid. WE WERE NOT. AND ALL OTHER STUFF. And I heard a crack. Fortun’s mother, who we spoke with before her body camera was released, says deputies went to the wrong apartment. Roger was the only person in his apartment. They said they were responding to a disturbance. Was he fighting against himself? When law enforcement arrived, she told him how this tragedy happened to Roger Fortson, an American patriot. He was a role model. The OKALOOSA Sheriff’s Office did not respond to questions due to the number of lives lost. The sheriff’s office opened the door, now forever changed. FORSON’S ATTORNEY BENJAMIN CRUMP issued a statement IMMEDIATELY AFTER the release of the body camera, saying no verbal commands were given to drop T in a heavily redacted 4.5-minute video
