James Carville says Kamala Harris is being ‘slaughtered’ by GOP attacks

Democratic political strategist James Carville warned Democrats to prepare for a barrage of Republican attacks against Vice President Harris as Republicans seek to retake the White House for former President Trump.

“Look, she’s being slaughtered,” Carville said in an interview with Margaret Hoover on PBS’s “Firing Line” released Monday.

“And (Democrats) have to stand up and get ready. And they have to be able to defend and attack at the same time,” said the veteran Democratic strategist.

Harris became the likely Democratic presidential nominee last week after President Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her.

Her entry and Biden’s exit have instantly changed the nature of the race; polls point to a neck-and-neck race, and Democrats appear more motivated by Harris than the incumbent.

Carville still said the next few weeks would be crucial as both sides tried to define Harris.

“There will be a time of struggle to define who Vice President Harris is. And we better be prepared for that,” Carville said. “But I feel like we’re in a better position today than we were on Sunday morning (before Biden dropped out).”

Carville said it was understandable that Democrats were more enthusiastic about Harris than the 81-year-old Biden.

“What happened was that people wanted something different, and she just radiated the fact that she was, you know, excited about the future,” said Carville, who had been pessimistic about Biden’s chances of re-election.

“And there was no policy that anyone was pushing, and there was no particular group behind it. It was just the general feeling that people wanted an election other than Donald Trump and President Biden. And they got it,” Carville said.
