17-year-old dies in Merriam while assisting in three-vehicle crash on I-35

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 17-year-old Benjamin Van Buskirk was killed Saturday when he got out of his car to help another car on I-35. Police say Van Buskirk was trying to help a car that was hit from behind get to another car that was involved in a separate accident. According to the Highway Patrol, the driver of the car that was hit from behind suffered a serious injury. Dr. Sean DeMaree, principal of Olathe South High School, posted the tragic news on Facebook, saying, “Ben was a beloved Falcon and friend to many.”
