First arrest made in connection with March double homicide in North Texas – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Four months have passed since the murders of their sons bound two mothers together forever. And they still live in fear and deep grief, they say.

“The longer it goes on, the worse it gets. This wound will not heal with time. It will never heal,” said one of the mothers, who wished to remain anonymous.

On March 22, 2024, at around 9:20 p.m., 18-year-old friends Kamari Smith-Capps and Camren Stacy were shot and killed outside a supermarket on Dixon Avenue near Scyene Road, according to Dallas police.

Police have not released the circumstances, saying only that the Plano and Richardson high school seniors were in their car. Police found Smith-Capps dead behind the wheel and Stacy lying on the ground outside.

Then on Thursday, police tracked a stolen car to an apartment complex on Golf Lakes Trail. An encounter between several suspects and police ended in a shootout involving police officers and three arrests.

Among them was 19-year-old Deante Moore, who was charged with capital crimes in connection with the deaths of Smith-Capps and Stacy.

“The damage he has done and caused, out of nothing, nothing, out of pride and ego. That’s all,” Smith-Capps’ mother said.

Both women say they are relieved to hear that one of their sons’ suspected killers is now behind bars, but they can’t wait for police to find another suspect.

“It’s scary because these are not good people,” she said.

She added that there was no judgment that could bring her sons back.

Dallas police said the investigation is ongoing.
