Garth Walton of Florida arrested for serious crimes in connection with the January 6 riots

Another Florida man has been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. He is one of at least 127 Floridians out of nearly 1,500 people charged across the U.S., according to data compiled by USA TODAY.

Garth Nathaniel Walton, 32, was charged with serious crimes including causing a riot, attacking public buildings, resisting or obstructing the work of certain officers, and various misdemeanors, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia.

Walton, of Yulee, about 24 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested Monday.

What did Garth Walton do during the January 6 riots?

Police bodycam footage shows a man named Walton facing a defensive line of police officers near a line of metal barricades on the Lower West Plaza on the Capitol grounds at around 1:30 p.m.

“It is alleged that Walton walked up approximately four steps, approached the line of officers, grabbed a metal barrier and pushed it into the officers,” the press release said.

“Seconds later, after backing down the stairs to West Plaza, Walton again charged the police line and pushed the metal barricade in the direction of the officers. It is further alleged that Walton then picked up a white pole and threw it at the officers.”

The case was investigated by the FBI’s field offices in Jacksonville and Washington, the press release said.

How many officers were injured or killed in the January 6 riots at the US Capitol?

About 140 police officers were injured when thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump marched to the Capitol to disrupt a joint session of Congress certifying votes for President Joe Biden. Since then, five people have died:

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick died of a stroke the next day.
Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood and Metro Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, who responded to the riot, committed suicide a few days later.
Metro police officers Gunther Hashida and Kyle DeFreytag, who also responded to the attack, committed suicide in July.

By the end of the year, about 130 Capitol police officers had left the service, the ministry told a Senate committee.

How many of the January 6 rioters were from Florida?

According to a database maintained by USA TODAY, Florida led the number of rioters arrested on July 17, ahead of Texas with 104.

In Florida, more than a third of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, the two most prominent far-right groups involved in the storming of the Capitol, have also been charged for their actions on January 6. These individuals have faced some of the most serious charges in the wake of the insurrection.

Former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio of Miami was sentenced to 22 years in prison, the longest sentence yet in connection with the attack. Joseph Biggs of Ormond Beach, a Proud Boys member and leader of the Proud Boys at the Capitol, was sentenced to 17 years.

Just a few weeks ago, Raymund Joseph Cholod of Tallahassee was sentenced to 40 months in prison followed by three years probation.

Not all participants in the uprising were arrested or charged.

Sandra Atkinson of Fort Walton Beach was one of the people spotted walking through the Capitol doors. Two and a half months later, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed her to the Florida Board of Massage Therapy. Her involvement was not mentioned. Others across the country have run for office.
