Philadelphia police chaplains honored for supporting community during July 4 mass shooting

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson paid tribute to the 12th District police chaplains who helped the community after the deadly July 4 mass shooting.

About a dozen clergy were honored at a special ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday.

One person was killed and eight others were injured in a mass shooting on July 4 in southwest Philadelphia. Authorities said the shooting was a “sudden event.”

In the shooting, 19-year-old Maurice Quann was killed and eight others injured.

According to police, around 11:30 p.m. a car stopped and someone inside the car began shooting at attendees of a pop-up party in southwest Philadelphia.

The clergy immediately rushed to the neighborhood to provide assistance.

“We want residents in Southwest Philadelphia to realize that they are not being held hostage in their own homes. It is these military chaplains who are going out and providing some kind of support after the shootings in the area,” Johnson said.

No arrests were made.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 215-686-TIPS.
