Del City group launches investigation into Myles Davidson

THAT PROCESS. WELL, THE PROCESS IS QUITE SIMPLE. IF YOU THINK AN ELECTED OFFICIAL IN YOUR COUNTY IS DOING SOMETHING WRONG, YOU FILE A FORM. THERE IS A PROCESS, AND FROM THEN IT COULD BE INVESTIGATED. THAT’S THE CITIZEN’S RIGHT. WE WORK FOR THE CITIZENS OF OKLAHOMA COUNTY, AND IF YOU THINK WE ARE NOT EXECUTING THOSE DUTIES, YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DEMAND A GRAND JURY. THAT’S WHAT WE FIRST TOLD YOU IN JUNE. THREE DELL CITY RESIDENTS CLAIMS THE PROCESS OF SELECTING A SITE FOR OKLAHOMA COUNTY’S NEW PRISON WAS CORRUPT. THEY PARTICULARLY WANT AN INVESTIGATION INTO COMMISSIONER MILES DAVIDSON. TODAY THEY GOT THE GREEN LIGHT TO COLLECT SIGNATURES FOR THIS PETITION. ANYWHERE THERE ARE PEOPLE THEY WILL SHOW UP WITH THE PETITION AND LOOK FOR SIGNATURES. SO WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION? CITIZENS HAVE 45 DAYS TO COLLECT A MAXIMUM OF 5,000 SIGNATURES. WE BELIEVE WE CAN DOUBLE THAT. THESE SIGNATURES COME BACK HERE AND WE CHECK THEM AND THEN WE SEND THEM TO THE ELECTIONS COMMITTEE WHERE THEY ARE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE AUTHENTIC AND MEET THE REQUIREMENTS. ONCE THE SIGNATURES ARE COLLECTED, THEY BELIEVE THE CASE WILL GO TO THE GRAND JURY. WE HAVE MORE PEOPLE VOLUNTEERING TO HELP FOR THIS THAN WE’VE EVER HAD FOR ANYTHING. THE JUDGE HAS ALREADY DECIDED THAT THERE ARE ENOUGH HERE TO AT LEAST LOOK AT IT. THAT DOES NOT MEAN ANY PERSON IS GUILTY. IT JUST MEANS IT’S AN ARBITRARY THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT. THERE ARE QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED. COMMISSIONER MILES DAVIDSON TELLS US IN A STATEMENT THAT THESE RESIDENTS HAVE NOT APPROACHED HIM ABOUT THIS ISSUE. HIS VOTE TO MOVE THE PRISON WAS BASED ON THE URGENT NEED FOR MODERN, HUMANE CONDITIONS OF PRISONMENT

Del City residents begin petition process for grand jury investigation of county commissioner

On Monday, these residents were given the green light to begin collecting signatures for this petition.

A group in Del City took steps Monday to stop the construction of a new Oklahoma County Detention Center near their homes by investigating possible corruption. Three Del City residents alleged in June that the process for selecting a possible jail site was corrupt. Residents turned to the petition process to demand an investigation of Oklahoma County Commissioner Myles Davidson. “This is a civil right. We work for the citizens of Oklahoma County, and if they feel we are not fulfilling our duties, they have every right to demand a grand jury,” said Rick Warren, the Oklahoma County Clerk of Court. On Monday, those residents were given the green light to begin collecting signatures for that petition. “Anywhere there are people, we will show up with the petition and look for signatures,” said Del City Mayor Floyd Eason. So what does it take to prompt a grand jury investigation? “The citizen has 45 days to collect a minimum of 500, a maximum of 5,000 signatures. Those signatures come back here. We review them and put a file stamp on them. Then we send them to the Board of Elections to make sure they’re genuine and meet the requirements and have to have at least 500 registered voters,” Warren said. Once the signatures are collected, Del City residents believe the case will go before a grand jury. “The cap is 5,000, but we’re going to aim for 10,000. We think we can double that,” Eason said. “The judge has already ruled that there’s enough hard evidence, that there’s enough for them to look at. That doesn’t mean anyone is guilty. It just means there’s hard evidence to look at and there are questions to answer.” Davidson told KOCO 5 in a statement that residents had not contacted him on the matter. His vote to move the jail was based on the urgent need for modern, humane detention facilities, according to the statement.
