Two dead and more than a dozen injured in shooting in Detroit, Michigan State Police say

DETROIT (AP) — Two people were killed and 19 others injured in a shooting in Detroit early Sunday, according to Michigan State Police.

According to a post on social media platform X, state police said no one was in custody and they were assisting Detroit police with the investigation. The agency said its preliminary information indicates the 19 injured victims had “various injuries.”

Detroit Police Commander Dan Donakowski declined immediate comment on the shooting, saying the department plans to release details later Sunday.

The shooting came amid a violent holiday weekend across the country. The summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, often see an increase in violence and mass shootings. Researchers say the reason for this is a combination of factors, including more social gatherings and higher alcohol consumption.
