Man shot by police after weapons found in his car

For hours, dozens of law enforcement agencies assisted Cranberry Township police in searching for a man described as unconscious who had entered the township with a cart full of weapons. On Tuesday, all of Cranberry Township was advised to remain safe during the search. That warning has since been lifted and police say the township is safe. The suspect is now dead. The Butler County Coroner identified the man as 37-year-old Logan Cumberland. Authorities are currently investigating his death and are calling it a “fatal police-involved shooting.” A new press release says they found Cumberland in a wooded area near the golf course. Cumberland was reportedly armed when officers confronted him. No further information has been released. The case was sparked by a call from Cranberry Highlands Golf Course employees who encountered the man, who had told them his car was broken down. “He was not speaking coherently. Those employees recognized there were weapons in the vehicle at the time, specifically long guns. And there was a weapon in the vehicle that was described to us as an AR long gun,” Cranberry Twp. Police Chief Kevin Meyer told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. When police arrived to investigate, the man was not in the car, but what they found raised further concerns. They were extremely concerning. And that’s why we had such a large police and law enforcement response to this incident,” Meyer said. “They found some notes in the vehicle that were extremely concerning to officers and indicated that this individual was not mentally stable and may have wanted to harm himself or others.” Video from Sky 4 showed the large police presence that joined Cranberry police, including the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, sheriff’s deputies from Butler and Allegheny counties, Pittsburgh police and many others who joined the search effort. Meyer says they found the man in a wooded area off Freshcorn Road after 3 p.m. During the press conference, the police chief would only say that the man no longer posed a threat to the public.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 asked if the man committed suicide or if there was an exchange of gunfire. “Our investigators are still investigating this. The Pennsylvania State Police will be assisting us in the investigation, so those details have not been released yet. More information will follow,” Meyer said.VIDEO BELOW: Sky 4 over the command center on Powell Road in Cranberry Township The police chief confirmed that the notes in the man’s car referenced UPMC in some way. “I did not see the note, but from what I was told, it had to do with the physical security of a UPMC facility. I don’t know which facility. I don’t know where it was exactly,” Meyer said. “UPMC was just mentioned.” State police will take over the investigation after the incident.

During the search, all of Cranberry Township was advised to shelter in place on Tuesday. That warning has since been lifted and police say the community is safe.

Authorities are currently investigating his death and are calling it a “fatal officer-involved shooting.” A new press release says they found Cumberland in a wooded area near the golf course. Cumberland was reportedly armed when officers confronted him. No further information has been released.

The decisive factor in the case was a call from employees of the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course, who encountered the man who had told them that his car had broken down.

“He was not speaking coherently. These officers recognized that there were weapons in the vehicle at that time, specifically long guns. And there was a weapon in the vehicle that was described to us as an AR-style long gun,” Cranberry Twp. Police Chief Kevin Meyer told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4.

When police arrived to investigate, the man was not in the car, but what they found raised further concerns.

Meyer says they found the man in a wooded area off Freshcorn Road after 3 p.m. During the press conference, the police chief simply said the man no longer poses a threat to the community.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 asked if the man committed suicide or if there was an exchange of gunfire.

“Our investigators are still looking into the matter. The Pennsylvania State Police will assist us in the investigation. So these details have not been released yet. More information will follow,” Meyer said.

The chief confirmed that the notes in the man’s car somehow referenced UPMC.
