Northern Kentucky Health Department issues drug overdose warning in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY, Kentucky – A drug overdose alert has been issued in Boone County, the Northern Kentucky Health Department announced Wednesday.

The warning was issued after 17 non-fatal suspected overdoses were reported between June 25 and July 1, the health ministry said.

“This is an unusually high number of suspected, non-fatal drug overdoses,” the health department said. “People who use drugs in or near this area should be cautious for their own protection.”

The health department gave several tips for those who use drugs or are near them:

  • Always have naloxone on hand and administer it if an overdose is suspected.
  • Call 911 if you suspect an overdose
  • Do not take drugs alone.
  • Check in on friends, family members, neighbors and others.

Naloxone is available at several locations in Northern Kentucky through the health department’s county health centers. Everyone who receives a naloxone kit also receives a 10- to 15-minute training session with a nurse on how to properly administer it.
