3 coyotes killed after 5-year-old girl attacked at California Botanical Garden

The recent attack on a young girl at the San Francisco Botanical Garden resulted in the killing of three coyotes by local wildlife authorities.

A five-year-old girl was attending a day camp at a botanical garden in Golden Gate Park when she was bitten by a coyote on Friday, June 28, forcing authorities to temporarily close the area, SFGATE reported.

“There were puncture wounds consistent with a coyote bite,” Patrick Foy, chief of law enforcement for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told the outlet on July 1. “She was taken to the hospital. She is expected to recover, she will be fine.”

Officers immediately alerted other agencies and took the necessary steps to find the coyote that had bitten the young girl. “We were able to reach the child before the bite wounds could be thoroughly cleaned,” Foy told SFGATE. “They used a cotton swab and ran it over the area where the animal had pierced the skin.”

Representatives from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) told PEOPLE that “CDFW Wildlife forensic scientists matched DNA from the attack victim’s bite wounds to that of a coyote that was euthanized over the weekend.”

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) was subsequently called to the scene. USDA trappers identified the other two coyotes that had been in the area at the time of the attack on the child and shot them, SFGATE reported.

While the young girl is still recovering from her minor injuries, the CDFW was unable to provide an update on the rabies status of the animal that bit her. They told PEOPLE that “rabies testing is not performed by our agency and takes several days, so it is not yet available.”
