Why is there a smell of smoke in the Houston area on Monday, July 1?

Area police departments are releasing a message explaining why there is smoke in the air after receiving calls. This is from a raging fire in Brazoria County.

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas — Depending on where you are, you may have noticed the strong smell of smoke Monday morning.

It’s probably because of what’s happening in Brazoria County. There has been a forest fire raging since Sunday.

The fire is burning near departmental roads 227 and 208. No structures were damaged and no roads closed, according to authorities, but the population is asked to avoid the area.

Due to the fire, people are contacting emergency services to ask what the smoke smells like.

In Webster, the police department posted a message on social media, alerting people to the smell.
