The accident occurred around 11am on Sunday morning on the Bruce Highway near the town of Gumlu, north of Bowen, just over an hour before the bus was scheduled to arrive at its destination.

Three people are confirmed dead and many more are being treated on site.

Pictures from the scene of the accident show a badly damaged bus with a shattered front cabin on the highway, surrounded by police officers and paramedics.

Paramedics examined 27 people on site – seven of them had life-threatening injuries, according to Queensland Ambulance.

They were taken to the emergency department of Townsville University Hospital and Ayr Health Service.

Community members have been asked to stay away from the hospital while staff treat the injured, unless the case is serious.

“Staff at both hospitals are currently treating patients from the crash,” Townsville Hospital and Health Service said in a social media post.

According to ABC, the Greyhound bus left Brisbane at 12:30pm on Saturday and was scheduled to arrive in Townsville at 12:10pm on Sunday.

According to Queensland Ambulance, the Bruce Highway was closed in both directions, causing significant delays.

It is unclear how many people were on the bus and how the accident occurred.

The Central Queensland Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the scene along with several emergency services.

Queensland Police are expected to release further details at a press conference shortly.
