Two teenagers arrested for manslaughter – cause for concern over youth violence

Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting and robbery over the weekend in North Sacramento, police said. The arrest underscores growing concerns about youth violence. On Thursday, police released more details about the arrest of the 15- and 16-year-old boys and recent youth violence in the city. “I would like to announce that we have an update on the case and we have arrested two juvenile suspects. They were booked into a juvenile detention center last night and charged with robbery and murder,” said Sacramento Police Lt. Mark Scurria. Over the past two weeks, KCRA 3 has reported on at least three different violent crimes involving juveniles. KCRA 3 asked Sacramento police if there was an increase in violent crime among youth. “I wouldn’t say it’s an increase. I would say there’s always a little bit of an increase in crime in the summer months,” Scurria said. But Berry Accius, community advocate and founder of The Voice of the Youth, said fewer people are advocating for change the community needs. “You hear more cuts to youth programming than more support and more investment in the intervention and prevention space. When I’m with my young children, I see the change in behavioral attitudes, things they’re engaging in, access to guns over opportunities,” Accius said. That’s the purpose of the annual rally against gun violence Friday at the Capitol. “To make a direct change, a lasting change, and to make sure our voices are heard. I think it’s important for us to make sure that we recognize those that we’ve lost. And we continue to recognize the simple fact that we have so much more work to do,” Accius said. The Don’t Shoot Our Future Down rally begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of 10th Street and Capitol Mall.Find more coverage of California’s top news stories here | Download our app.

Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting and robbery over the weekend in north Sacramento, police said. The arrests underscore growing concerns about youth violence.

On Thursday, police released further details about the arrest of the 15 and 16 year old boys and the recent youth violence in the city.

“I would like to announce that we have an update on the case and have arrested two juvenile suspects. They were booked into a juvenile detention center last night and charged with robbery and murder,” said Mark Scurria of the Sacramento Police Department.

In the last two weeks, KCRA 3 has reported on at least three separate violent crimes involving juveniles.

KCRA 3 asked Sacramento police if there was an increase in violent crime among youth.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an uptick. I would say there’s always a little bit of an uptick in crime in the summer months,” Scurria said.

But Berry Accius, a citizen activist and founder of Voice of Youth, says fewer and fewer people are committed to the change the community needs.

“You hear more about cuts to youth programs than about more support and more investment in the area of intervention and prevention. When I interact with my young children, I see how their behavior changes, how they engage with things, how they get access to guns before they get opportunities,” Accius said.

That is the purpose of the annual rally against gun violence on Friday at the Capitol.

“We want to make a direct change, a lasting change, and our voices need to be heard. I think it’s important for us to make sure that we acknowledge those we’ve lost. And we need to continue to acknowledge the simple fact that we still have so much more to do,” Accius said.

The “Don’t Shoot Our Future Down” rally begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of 10th Street and Capitol Mall.
