Woman randomly beaten with bat in Lower Manhattan – horrific attack captured on video

A woman who was beaten with a baseball bat in a disturbing attack caught on camera is recovering after being randomly attacked by two men on a Lower Manhattan street.

Surveillance video shows Shi Yanan, 58, looked at her phone as she walked along Monroe Street near Market Street around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

As the video shows, the men crept up behind her and the one who wasn’t carrying a baseball bat hit her on the back of the head.

When Yanan put her hand to her head and turned around, the men pushed her against a doorframe and inexplicably began punching, kicking, and beating her with a baseball bat.

The woman crouched on the ground, her belongings scattered on the sidewalk, and took a moment to recover from the horrific, random attack.

A passerby holding a shopping bag and pushing a scooter appeared to stop to check on Yanan while she was on the phone.

The attackers did not steal anything from her, police said.

Paramedics took Yanan to SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

On Wednesday, her family told the Daily News that the woman suffered bruises to her leg and head and was recovering at her Staten Island home.

“Fortunately, the cries of passersby and the courageous intervention of community members deterred the perpetrator and led to a timely call for help. This may have averted worse consequences,” a family member said in a statement.

“This incident has not only caused physical harm, but also severe psychological trauma”

The attackers have not yet been caught by the police.

“It is truly reprehensible to target the elderly, women and children,” the family said. “We call on the police to use all evidence to quickly bring the perpetrator to justice.”
