A Cape Town police officer was arrested on suspicion of raping a six-year-old boy.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the officer, who was stationed at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Plattekloof, after he allegedly raped the child on Sunday.

IPID spokesman Phaladi Shuping said: “The boy’s mother visited the police officer, who is a neighbour. She was accompanied by her 6-year-old son. The mother fell asleep on the couch after drinking alcohol and the police officer allegedly raped the boy while the mother was sleeping.”

The next day, the boy reported the incident to a community member and a rape case was reported to IPID, Shuping said.

The officer appeared in court on Thursday.

The case was adjourned until July 1 for a formal bail application.

The officer remains in custody.

In 2023, IPID arrested another police officer in the Western Cape province for the alleged rape of a woman in a holding cell.

The woman had been arrested in Citrusdal for assault and was arrested in the early hours of the morning. A police officer then allegedly entered the cell and raped her.

She reported the incident to another police officer who was on duty that morning.

The guilty officer was arrested in Piketberg and has since appeared before the Clanwilliam Magistrates Court.
