Newport County YMCA reopens after sauna incident

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Newport County YMCA reopened Sunday after a woman was injured in an incident in the sauna on June 15.

There was a malfunction in one of the facility’s saunas. When the door was opened, the excessive steam triggered the sprinkler system.

The women’s locker rooms, ground floor bathrooms and spin room will remain closed as a restoration company will assess the water damage in the coming days.

“Due to the closure of the women’s locker room, we ask that you please use the general locker room,” the facility said. “Both steam rooms will remain closed until further notice while we investigate the cause of the incident.”

The woman involved in the incident suffered minor but non-life-threatening injuries.
