ALERT | Severe storms are possible on Wednesday afternoon and evening

TEXARKANA – The National Weather Service has predicted the possibility of severe storms in the four-state region this afternoon and evening.

Scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase in upper elevations ahead of a weak cold front and associated disturbances, according to a statement from the NWS Shreveport office.

Hail, damaging winds and the possibility of a tornado or two are possible. Storms are expected to dissipate late over northwest Louisiana.

The NWS threat level for Texarkana is Enhanced, the third highest of five levels.

NWS offers the following storm safety advisories.

The best protection from thunderstorms is to stay in a sturdy building or shelter that will protect you from deadly lightning, large hail, damaging winds, driving rain and tornadoes. Fortunately, thunderstorms usually don’t last very long and usually pass your location in less than an hour.

When in shelter, stay away from windows and avoid electrical devices and wires. Remember to bring pets. If there is time, secure loose items outside as they often become dangerous flying debris in high winds.

Postpone outdoor activities until the storms pass.

If you are caught outside, immediately seek shelter in a sturdy, enclosed building or a car with a solid roof. Avoid open areas, isolated objects, high floors and metallic objects.

Abandon boats and move away from bodies of water. Remember: If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the thunderstorm to be struck by lightning.
