Release Date: Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Delaware State Police arrested a 36-year-old Larry Kelley of Newport, Delaware, on charges of aggravated assault and other offenses in connection with the investigation of a hit-and-run crash involving a stolen vehicle that occurred Saturday morning at Christiana Hospital in Newark.

On June 8, 2024, at approximately 8:12 a.m., officers responded to Christiana Hospital, located at 4755 Ogletown Stanton Road, Newark, for a male patient who had fled the hospital in a stolen vehicle following a hit-and-run accident. Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect, identified as Larry Kelley, was a patient in the emergency room at Christiana Hospital when he became increasingly aggressive and ran from the hospital. After running from the hospital, Kelley evaded arrest by several ChristianaCare police officers by getting into an unoccupied and unsecured SUV that was idling outside the emergency room entrance. Kelley then struck and ran over an officer with the stolen SUV as he fled the parking lot toward Churchmans Road. The officer was treated at the hospital for serious injuries.

A short time later, officers found the stolen SUV abandoned in the area of East Newport Pike and Forest Drive and learned that Kelley had fled from the SUV on foot. Officers, assisted by officers from the Newport Police Department, searched the area and found Kelley attempting to break into a home on Maple Hill Road. He was subsequently taken into custody without incident.

A computer query revealed that Kelley does not have a valid driver’s license. After Kelley was medically released from the hospital, he was transported to Squad 2 where he was charged with the crimes listed below and arraigned in Justice of the Peace 11. He was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $11,500 bail.
