Teenager dies after accident

PM student “brought joy and laughter”

A Parry McCluer High School student died last week after being hit by a car while riding his bike.

The accident occurred last Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of East 39th Street and Catalpa Avenue.

According to a statement from Buena Vista police, 16-year-old Lucas Smith and another juvenile were traveling north on Catlapa while the car was traveling south.

According to witnesses, Smith turned in front of the car onto East 39th Street and was not seen by the driver. After the accident, the driver parked the vehicle in a nearby parking lot, waited for police, and cooperated with the investigation. Smith was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries the next morning.

PMHS Principal Dr. Todd Jones and District School Superintendent Dr. Tony Francis made statements to students, parents and staff last Thursday, the division’s last day of school.

Jones said students could be picked up early that day and that counselors would be available if students or teachers needed them. He also noted that Rockbridge Area Community Services is also available for counseling and can be reached at (540) 463-3113.

In his statement, Francis said that Smith “was not just a student; he was a valued member of our school family.”

“His presence brought joy, laughter and kindness to those around him, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” he said. “He had a unique way of touching the lives of everyone he met and left a lasting impression that will be fondly remembered by classmates, teachers and staff alike. Let us remember Lucas for the light he brought to our lives and the positive influence he had on our school. May his spirit live on in our memories and may we find comfort in the precious moments we shared with him.”

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at the Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista. A wake will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
