Hilo man charged with drug and weapons offenses after making terrorist threat: Big Island Now

A 22-year-old Hilo man faces multiple charges after an incident involving terroristic threats with a firearm outside a residence on Ho’omalu Street in Hilo on June 1.

Daryl C. Sampaga Jr. was arrested and charged following the incident and the execution of search warrants. During this incident, Big Island Police seized over 420 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a .380 caliber Ruger LCP semi-automatic pistol.

Sampaga is accused of:

  • First degree advertising for a dangerous drug.
  • Attempted sale of a dangerous drug in the first degree.
  • First degree terrorist threat.
  • The possession or carrying of a firearm is prohibited.
  • Possession or possession of ammunition prohibited.
  • Space to store a pistol or revolver.
  • Alteration of identification marks is prohibited.

Sampaga made his first appearance in Hilo District Court on Monday.

His bail was kept at $390,000 and he was ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

First-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and first-degree attempted sale of a dangerous drug are the most serious offenses Sampaga is accused of. They are Class A felonies and can be punished by up to 20 years in prison or 10 years probation and up to 24 months in prison.

Hawaii County prosecutors told the court that if convicted, Sampaga would face prison time and would not be eligible for parole.
