Star of “Dead Boy Detectives” talks about the Sandman’s shared universe

The Dead Detectives has arrived on Netflix and links directly to The Sandman with several characters making cameo appearances. Having said that, The Dead Detectives is also a series that wants to stand on its own.




In a recent interview with CBR’s Kevin Polowy, series star George Rexstrew, who plays Edwin Payne, comments on the show’s connections to The Sandman. While The Dead Detectives has not received a renewal order at this time, that could possibly happen, and there is also a second season of The Sandman on the way. Rexstrew was asked how much the two shows will ultimately align, and the actor noted that the shared universe is clear, although both The Sandman And The Dead Detectives can continue to coexist as separate entities.

But the shows also feel different in a really exciting way. I think the pace of a television series is set by its protagonist. Jayden (Revri) and I don’t have the energy of Morpheus, who is Dream in The Sandman. So you come see our show and you’re in for a totally crazy, wild ride. I find it really funny that these two can coexist.”

Steve Yockey developed the series and served as showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz. The show is based on the original comic by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. Yockey, Schwartz and Gaiman served as executive producers along with David Madden, Lee Toland Krieger, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter, Greg Berlanti and Leigh London Redman.

Will “Dead Boy Detectives” continue on Netflix?

The eight-part series debuted on Netflix on April 25. It has not been canceled or renewed yet, so the future of The Dead Detectives is not entirely clear. Notably, it received a lot of praise, achieving a rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series also landed at number 2 on the top 10 English-language TV shows on Netflix. The Sandman was officially extended about three months after its premiere in 2022, so it may also take some time before the fate of The Dead Detectives will be officially revealed by the streaming platform.
