Violent weekend in DC leaves teenager dead and community devastated

Community members said they would like more officers and more funding.

WASHINGTON – It was another violent week in the District.

On Friday evening, an 18-year-old man was killed and two others injured at the corner of 16th and W Streets, Southeast in historic Anacostia.

On Saturday, a 38-year-old man was shot and killed in the 700 block of Atlantic Street in the Washington Highlands neighborhood in the southeastern United States.

Two hours later, a 15-year-old teenager was shot in the 600 block of 18th Street, Northeast, just behind the Rosedale Recreation Center.

Sondra Gilbert, who has lived in Rosedale for 30 years, is asking those responsible for help.

“I am devastated because we lost a child. Our community does not have the support it needs. People are begging you to vote for them. When we vote, we need to see something being done about it,” said Sondra Gilbert.

Pastor Tony Herndon of Grace Nation Ministry works with families throughout the DMV affected by gun violence, providing counseling, mentoring, meals, and recently began working at the DC Juvenile Detention Center.

“We go in to hear what they are going through so we can make a difference, because we are making all the decisions for them without really knowing the problem,” said District Elder Pastor Tony Herndon Jr.

This service helps teenagers reintegrate into society with a plan and a support system that the family trusts.

“We go into the conflict areas and help young people get out of there so they can move back in. We give them a purpose in life,” said Pastor Herndon.

Community members said they would like more funding for additional officers in the community. Gilbert is confident the upcoming election will bring change.

“I am deeply saddened. I cannot imagine these parents losing their lives. In this new election we will see who will take care of us,” said Gilbert.
