Newcastle man abuses woman after she suggested they ‘do something naughty together’

A Newcastle man suggested a woman “do something naughty together” before sexually assaulting her.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Moji Miah, 50, was travelling in the car with the victim and suggested they “do something indecent together”, which she refused. Later that same day, the court was told that Miah approached the victim “in a state of undress”, began to undress her and hug her.

He put his hand on her shoulder and asked: “Do you want to?” He then started kissing the victim’s neck and she said no, the court was told. Miah, of Cedar Road, Fenham, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault.

The victim, who read a statement in court, said: “I am afraid of meeting new people, so I avoid situations where that might happen. I have become more isolated and my self-confidence has been more affected.”

“It used to be part of my social routine to go out with my friends, for example to the movies. Recently I’ve been forcing myself to go out with my friends more often, but it’s not the same. I get nervous when I have to go out, and when I do go out, I’m not the same as I used to be.

“I think about this case all the time. I’m in my own world and absorbed in the whole situation.”

Sentencing, Judge Nathan Adams said: “It has obviously affected you badly, which is hardly surprising. I don’t know what prompted you to behave in this way. I think that will have to be clarified with the probation service.”

Judge Adams said the prison sentence would be several months and instead imposed two years of community service and at least 40 rehabilitation days.

“You need to sit down with someone and discuss what prompted your behavior,” he said.

Miah was also on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
