Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal car crash that killed a 41-year-old Carroll County man on May 31. The driver was identified as Geoffrey Brittingham of Hampstead. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Brittingham was driving a 2022 Ford Explorer north on Emory Road near the Cedarhurst Road intersection shortly before 11:30 p.m. Investigators believe he failed to stop because a construction site to replace the North Branch Patapsco River bridge was closed, causing him to collide with the rear of a Volvo excavator and a Mack dump truck.

Brittingham’s 7-year-old son was a passenger in the back seat of the Explorer. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The long-term construction site was closed at the time of the incident. Police advise motorists that the MD 91 bridge will be closed for an extended period of time and a detour via MD 30 and MD 140 is planned.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation into the fatal accident.
