Fordham Manor: 15-year-old girl from Manhattan dies in moped accident, driver arrested

A 15-year-old girl from Manhattan died in a car accident in the Fordham Manor neighborhood of the Bronx.

Police said officers from the 52nd Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a car crash at the intersection of West 192nd Street and University Avenue at approximately 12:09 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

“Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old man with minor injuries and a 15-year-old woman who was unconscious and unresponsive with injuries to her head and body,” a police spokesman said.

“EMS responded, pronounced the woman dead at the scene and transported the man to St. Barnabas Hospital where he is in stable condition,” the spokesman added.

Police said a preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) revealed that a 22-year-old man, the driver of Vehicle No. 1, a Honda Pilot, was traveling northbound on University Avenue when he collided with Vehicle No. 2, a moped traveling in the same direction at a high rate of speed and driven by the 18-year-old man with the 15-year-old female passenger.

They said the driver of Vehicle No. 1 is still on scene and uninjured, the 18-year-old driver of the moped was taken into custody as part of a previous investigation, and the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad’s investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Police said Dafney Juan of Manhattan was identified as the deceased victim.

In collision investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while the NYC Department of Transportation inspects the road layout at the accident scenes.
