Houston janitors strike deal with cleaning contractors

The new contract includes a big pay increase for more than 3,000 janitors.

HOUSTON — Three weeks ago, hundreds of janitors represented by the SEIU Texas union agreed to go on strike if they did not receive better pay, hours and benefits. On Friday, an agreement was reached.

“Taking a big step forward to try to achieve a living wage here in Houston,” said SEIU Texas President Elsa Flores.

The new contract includes a big pay increase for more than 3,000 janitors. Those working full-time will earn at least $15 per hour and part-time janitors will earn just over $14 per hour.

Flores said the pay increase is the largest since the union was founded.

“In 2006, obviously, they saw a pretty huge increase, but we haven’t seen something like this in a long time,” Flores said.

The janitors represented by the union are relieved. Maria Zamudio earned $10 an hour.

Looking ahead, I’m happy that we can spend more time with our kids and maybe not have to work two jobs,” Zamudio said.

Maria isn’t the only one who feels this way. Zacarias Tzul also worked extra hours and jobs to make ends meet.

“I had a part-time job, sometimes I worked overtime on weekends to earn enough and with this it would be enough,” Tzul said.

Tzul said the salary increase would be enough for now.

“He It may not yet be enough, but it is important. It’s a significant increase for them,” Flores said.

Although the increase won’t happen immediately, union members are proud of the steps taken and say their fight for more can be a sign of hope for others.

“In Right now, workers are saying we need more. It’s not that we want more, we need more and I hope this shows people what’s achievable and what’s possible if they work on it together,” Flores said.
