Arrest in shooting in rural Viroqua | Crime and courts

VIROQUA, Wis. (WXOW) – Additional details were released Tuesday regarding an incident the day before in which a person fired a gun during an argument.

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson said around 11:15 a.m. they received a 911 call about an incident between a man and a woman at a home on West Smith Road in the town of Viroqua.

During the incident, the caller said a gun was fired.

Officers responded to the scene and discovered that the 41-year-old woman involved was safe at another location.

They also saw a man running into a cornfield.

The sheriff’s office said Nakeil Jermaine Bettis, 44, was taken into custody around 11:30 a.m

The officers also found evidence of a firearm being fired. The pistol was later found.

Bettis was taken into custody on charges including first-degree recklessly endangering safety, assault, disorderly conduct and domestic violence.

He was given a $1,000 cash bond at a bail hearing Monday. By Monday evening the amount was paid and Bettis was released.

He is scheduled to appear in court again at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday
