Mother moose attacks hunter in eastern Idaho

Idaho Fish and Game said the man accidentally startled the moose and her twin calves. The moose attacked the hunter and knocked him to the ground.

BOISE, Idaho – A turkey hunter suffered bruises after being attacked by a cow moose south of the Blackfoot city limits on Friday, May 24.

A news release from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game said the attack occurred after the hunter accidentally startled a female moose with two calves. The female moose charged at him and knocked him to the ground after the hunter reportedly fired two warning shots into the ground in front of the animal.

IDFG said the moose ran away after being hit by the third shot. The hunter reported he suffered “bruising” and would seek medical attention if his injuries worsened.

As for the animal, the hunter told Idaho Fish and Game that as he was leaving, he saw the mother moose lie down and then get up and graze with her calves.

The condition of the moose is unknown.

IDFG urges hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to be cautious in dense forests or thick vegetation, where it may be more difficult to see animals.

Idaho Fish and Game has compiled the following list of tips in case you see a moose:

  • Keep your distance, at least three car lengths between you and the animal. Never approach a moose, especially a female with her young.
  • If you are traveling with dogs, keep your pets under control with a leash and do not let them chase moose or other wildlife.
  • A moose will often blink, paw the ground, and lick its lips. If it lowers its ears, an attack is likely imminent!
  • If a moose attacks, run away. Try to put a tree or other object between you and the moose, or climb a tree if necessary.
  • If you have bear spray, use it! Bear spray can be purchased online or at most sporting goods stores. It’s important to keep it handy on your body at all times.
  • If you are on the ground, curl up and protect your face and head as much as possible. Try not to make any noise. Moose attack because they perceive you as a threat.
  • If you lie quietly curled up on the floor, you are likely to appear less threatening.
