2 dead after Houston police chase ends in crash

One of the men died at the scene of the crash, according to Houston police. Another died after being taken to hospital and two other passengers were seriously injured, according to police.

Officers attempted to stop a silver Hyundai Elantra after it ran a red light and nearly hit another vehicle, Rodriguez said. The sedan did not stop in front of the police and drove away. The pursuit turned west onto Long Drive, continuing to the intersection of Lancaster, where the car struck a concrete barrier and overturned, police said.

The mangled car came to rest in the parking lot of a bar. No police officers or bystanders were injured.

The chase lasted about 2 minutes, Rodriguez said.

The names of the deceased men were not immediately released. Rodriguez said police were investigating whether the men might have committed other crimes before the chase, but no charges had been filed.

The two officers who participated in the chase were placed on administrative duty, which is normal procedure, Rodriguez said.

A 2023 Houston Chronicle investigation found that Houston police engaged in higher-speed police pursuits than other police departments of similar size, and that the department had flexible policies on when Officers should begin a pursuit. Between 2019 and 2023, more than 740 people were injured and 27 people died in chases involving Houston police officers.
