Port of Calcutta announces closure of operations on Sunday evening due to cyclone alert | News from India

The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata will suspend all cargo and container handling operations for 12 hours from Sunday evening due to the forecast of a cyclonic storm, officials said.

Operations will be suspended from Sunday, 6 p.m., to Monday, 6 a.m., it said.

The decision was made in the interest of the safety of the dock workers, they added.

Port Chairman Rathendra Raman held a meeting on Saturday to oversee preparations to deal with the impact of the possible cyclone. In the meeting with port officials, he stressed on proactive measures and inter-departmental cooperation.

Rail operations in the port area will also be suspended during this time, officials said.

Festive offer

The cyclone is expected to make landfall on the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday night with wind speeds of 110 to 120 km/h and gusts of up to 135 km/h, the weather office said.
