The cub and its mother Luana, RN58, were first spotted on the North Shore on Thursday. The cub was pronounced dead on Friday, according to NOAA Fisheries.

According to officials, the death was reported as a “suspected dog attack” that occurred Thursday evening.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident is being investigated by the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement.

Authorities would like to remind the public that the Hawaiian monk seal breeding season peaks from March to August.

Beachgoers should keep a minimum distance of 150 m from mother dogs and their puppies. In addition, dog owners are advised to keep their dogs on a leash on the beach.
