MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A small child was found dead in the back seat of a vehicle in Morgantown on Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Morgantown Police Department, officers were called to an apartment complex on Collins Ferry Road around 3 p.m. on May 22 for a cardiac arrest; when they arrived, emergency responders said a small child they found in the back seat of a parked SUV had already died.

The statement said the infant was a “young child” who was “seated in a rear-facing child seat,” but did not provide an exact age.

The death is currently being investigated by the Morgantown Police Department and the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office, but “no charges have been filed at this time,” the press release said.

“The department would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends directly affected by this tragic loss and recognize the devastating impact such a loss has on the community,” Morgantown Police Department Chief Eric Powell said in the press release.

Officials said information was still being gathered and no further information would be released.
