Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley said throwing a ball at Indiana Pacers fans late in Thursday’s Game 6 loss was “an unfortunate situation that never should have happened.”

“What I did was bad and it should never have happened,” Beverley said on his podcast Tuesday Pat Bev Pod. “I have to get better, and I will be better. This should never have happened, no matter what was said.”

The Athletics Shams Charania Beverley reportedly threw the ball into the crowd twice after a fan yelled “Cancún on three” toward a Bucks huddle.

“Let’s just say it was more than Cancun at three,” Beverley said.

The Bucks were eliminated in the 2024 first round after a 120-98 loss at Indiana.

“I’ve been called someone a lot in this league. I’ve never been called that before,” Beverley said. “Still inexcusable, it doesn’t matter what was said.”

Beverley concluded, “I won’t be bringing basketball to the bench anymore.”

The broadcast of the Bucks’ victory appeared to show Beverley throwing the ball into the crowd, hitting a female Pacers fan in the head before demanding the ball back.

After the ball was returned, he immediately threw it back and hit the hands of a male Pacers fan.

Charania, Lauren Merola and Eric Nehm noted in their report for The Athletic that before the taunt in Cancún, “further obscenities were said toward Beverley in advance of the escalation.”

Beverley said on his podcast that he could have had “four or five fans kicked out” if he had asked security to intervene during the game.

“Some people would say, ‘Pat, man, you should have kicked him out, that never would have happened.’ I’m not going to make sure fans don’t get kicked out,” Beverley said. “I’m not going to kick out people who spend money to watch us play.”

“Literally, security came up to me: ‘Do you want the fan thrown out?’ “No, man.” You can say anything when you win.

Beverley previously said on social media after the loss that the Bucks had been “warning and asking for help all night” regarding interactions with fans.

Beverley said the fans involved in the incident apologized after the game.

“Anyone who stepped out of line and said something too crazy, everyone apologized,” Beverley said. “It was just some people who crossed the line a little bit.”

If Beverley is disciplined for the incident, it could happen with another team. The veteran guard is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of his age-36 season.
