Parents concerned about bullying after attack on Denton ISD school bus – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Denton Independent School Board members were unexpectedly approached by students and parents during Tuesday’s regular meeting with concerns about bullying after a violent incident on a school bus last month.

It happened on Tuesday, April 23, around 4:08 p.m. in the 1600 block of E. McKinney Street.

Denton police said a driver of a Denton ISD school bus called 911 and told dispatchers that a fight had broken out on their bus.

Shortly after the first call, officers said they received another call around 4:14 p.m. from a woman who said several people had attacked her daughter in the 3500 block of E. McKinney Street. When police arrived at the scene, they found an injured 13-year-old girl.

The young teenager was examined by doctors at the scene and was not taken to a local hospital.

Investigators said the teen victim told them another teen girl and an adult woman attacked her on a school bus. She also told authorities about another assault that occurred after she got off the bus.

Denton ISD released a statement on Friday, May 3, following the incident, which was also captured on video.

This horrific video shows unacceptable behavior that Denton ISD never tolerates, including the unlawful boarding of an adult on a school bus. The dispute was about a conflict that began in a neighborhood and spread to the school grounds, the school bus.

While matters involving student discipline cannot be discussed publicly for privacy reasons, one of the affected students is no longer on campus and will not be returning. In situations like these, standard procedure is to send all directly involved parties home during the investigation to ensure impartiality.

Per county policy, the driver immediately called and requested police attention. For safety reasons, drivers are not permitted to use their personal cell phones on the bus. Police responded to this incident and the Denton Police Department is currently conducting an active investigation involving an adult unlawfully boarding the bus and injuring a child.

Denton ISD has prosecuted the adults involved and these individuals are no longer welcome on any Denton ISD property.

Following this situation, transportation officials reached out to the driver, tightened procedures and conducted additional training.

Police said the case was turned over to the Special Victims Unit for further investigation and authorities ultimately issued an arrest warrant for 21-year-old Traveonna Mays.

Traveonna Mays, 21, was arrested and charged with injury to a child after she allegedly attacked a 13-year-old girl on a Denton ISD school bus in April 2024.

Mays, the sister of another person involved in the attack, reportedly turned herself in at the Denton City Jail at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 9. She was charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony.

Denton police said May’s bond is $7,500 and she has since paid the bond back.

In the public comment section of Tuesday’s meeting, the attack victim and her mother shared details about the incident.

“I was beaten up by adults and a child at my school. I told the principal, assistant principal, and counselors everything that was going on. They did nothing. I asked for help, but they didn’t help me.” . They pulled the girl in but nothing was done.

Other parents mentioned at the Denton ISD meeting that their children were repeatedly bullied, but no action was taken. Bullying was not on Tuesday’s agenda and board members did not address the issue.
