School building in Alexandria secured due to security incident

ALEXANDRIA, VA – A trespasser who refused to leave an Alexandria elementary school led to a temporary “secure building” status Monday.

The William Ramsay Elementary School building was secured for about 15 minutes around 10:54 a.m. Monday, Principal Michael Routhouska told families in a letter. According to the school principal, a person who was not authorized to stay in the school refused to leave the school and failed to pass the security checkpoint at the entrance to the vestibule. Alexandria Police responded to the scene and determined there was no threat to the school.

The school has since resumed normal operations. Routhouska said the security decision was made “out of an abundance of caution.” The “Secure Building” status means the school day continued but no one was able to enter or exit the building.
