Former Houston coach Dana Holgorsen is being targeted by Big 12 rival, report says

The 2024 college football season is just a month away, and it promises to be a game-changing one with major conference shakeups shaking up the sport. One team looking to bounce back is TCU, which is looking to recover from a disappointing 5-7 record in 2023 after its College Football Playoff run two years ago.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, the Horned Frogs are reportedly targeting former Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen for a consulting role. This potential addition could provide a much-needed boost to TCU’s coaching staff. Holgorsen’s last tenure ended on Nov. 26, 2023, when Houston parted ways with him after five seasons.

Holgorsen’s coaching career included eight seasons with West Virginia before joining H-Town, where he went 61-41. He went 31-28 and appeared in three bowl games while coaching the Cougars. However, his tenure in Houston ended on a sour note with a 4-8 record in their inaugural Big 12 season, leading to his firing after a three-game losing streak.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes has been actively restructuring the coaching staff this offseason. Andy Avalos was named the new offensive coordinator, while Kendal Briles is set to begin his second season in the same role. The arrival of Holgorsen, with his vast experience and strategic vision, could be critical to TCU’s aspirations.

Holgorsen’s potential role at TCU also has financial implications. Houston owes him $14.8 million in severance, though a mitigation clause could reduce that amount if he gets another job. Heading into the 2024 season, all eyes will be on Holgorsen’s status to see if these changes can lead to a successful return.

Interestingly, TCU is scheduled to host Houston on Oct. 4 in a Big 12 matchup, which could see Holgorsen face off against his former team.
