Surprise arrest of teenager by police after fatal road rage shooting

INDEPENDENT NEWS MEDIA

An 18-year-old man was arrested as a suspect in a fatal road rage shooting that occurred around 1:30 p.m. on July 27 in Surprise, police said Sunday.

The shooter was identified as Jaidev Christian Spicely, police said.

Spicely fled after the shooting near 163rd and Grand avenues, and officers used cameras in the area to identify him as the suspect in the murder of James Nicholas Solano-Aguilar, 33, according to a Surprise police news release.

Officers drove to his home to arrest him, and on the way, Spicely called police and asked him to turn himself in. He was arrested without incident, police said.

Early Saturday afternoon, Surprise officers responded to 911 calls about a shooting near the intersection of 163rd and Grand Avenues, where they saw community members providing first aid to a man on the street, the news release said.

The victim was injured by several shots in the upper body and taken to a hospital where he later died.

Spicely was booked into the Maricopa County Intake and Release Jail on charges of first-degree murder, disorderly conduct with a weapon and discharging a firearm within city limits.

“The Surprise Police Department extends our condolences to the Solano-Aguilar family. Solano-Aguilar was an active member of the military and we are working with his department to coordinate resources for his family,” the press release said.

The department advises anyone who encounters aggressive behavior on the road to remain calm and not respond or retaliate. Instead, focus on driving and try to maintain a safe distance from the aggressive driver.
