CCTV footage reveals incident, Kollam, pregnant mare, horse beaten in Kollam, pregnant mare attacked, PETA, SPCA

Kollam: A disturbing incident took place in Vadakkevila, Kollam when a gang of local youths mercilessly beat a pregnant horse tied up inside the premises of Thekke Kavu Bhagavathy Temple. The four-and-a-half-year-old horse named Diya, owned by Shanavas, a native of Vadakkevila, was brutally attacked last Thursday.

The horse, which is usually tied at the temple during the day, showed signs of distress even after it was untied in the evening. Keepers noticed bruises on its legs and body. The shocking scenes were revealed when CCTV footage from the temple was reviewed on Friday.

The footage shows a group of youths arriving in cars and scooters and beating the horse with long sticks. They tied the horse’s rope tightly to a coconut tree, immobilizing it, while others relentlessly beat the horse with sticks and kicks. One person repeatedly kicked the horse in the chest.

An examination at Thevally District Veterinary Centre confirmed severe swelling on the horse’s chest and legs, as well as injuries above the eyes and on the face. Further details on the pregnant mare’s condition were not available due to a technical problem with the hospital’s scanning system.

A complaint was lodged with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Kollam, at Eravipuram police station, listing the names of local youths involved in the attack.
