The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene in Hong Kong announced on Monday that the import of poultry meat and poultry products, including eggs, has been suspended for certain regions of the United States.

The suspension was announced in light of a notification from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and affects imports from Renville County in Minnesota and Weld County in Colorado. CFS stated that the reason for this was to protect public health in Hong Kong.

A CFS spokesman said that according to the Census and Statistics Bureau, Hong Kong imported about 16,480 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 7.73 million poultry eggs from the United States in the first three months of this year.

“The CFS has contacted the American authority on this matter and will closely monitor the information published by the WOAH and the relevant authorities on the bird flu outbreaks. Depending on how the situation develops, appropriate measures will be taken,” the spokesman said.
