Thief posing as IDF officer arrested for breaking into evacuees’ homes – Israel News

Police arrested an Eilat resident who posed as an IDF officer and broke into several homes in Kiryat Shmona, police reported Tuesday morning.

After receiving reports of a break-in at an apartment in the city, Israeli police launched an undercover investigation.

During the investigation by Northern District police officers, it emerged that the suspect – a 30-year-old man – had been traveling around Kiryat Shmona in recent weeks, posing as a soldier from a special unit of the Israel Defense Forces and even appeared in uniform at the scene of a rocket attack in the city.

On Monday morning, officers operating in the city’s police department identified the suspect as he got off a bus wearing an IDF uniform with officer rank and carrying a loaded M16 rifle and a replica pistol.

Evidence of suspected squatting

During the investigation, it was found that he was wearing a stolen belt and had a stolen soldier’s identification tag around his neck. Large quantities of stolen items taken from various apartments in Kiryat Shmona were found in the suspect’s vehicle.

During a quick investigation, the police reached the apartment of an evacuated family, into which the suspect had allegedly previously broken and stayed for several days.

On Monday, the Tiberias District Court extended his prison sentence until July 19 at the request of the police.
