“There is no place for this kind of violence, or any violence at all, in America. An assassination goes against everything we stand for as a nation – everything,” he said.

Just days before he is due to officially accept the nomination for the Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt over the weekend. The attack will further exacerbate the political divide in the USA and raises questions about security deficiencies.

The Biden team had sought to refocus its message and portray Trump as a threat to democracy because of his persistent false claims of election fraud, but announced Saturday that it would halt its political advertising for the time being.

Authorities identified one of the protesters shot dead as Corey Comperatore, 50, of Sarver, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro told reporters he was killed when he threw himself on his family to protect them from the hail of bullets.

The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as a suspect in the alleged attempted murder. According to the state’s voter registration, he was a registered Republican and had made a $15 donation to a Democratic political action committee at age 17.

Law enforcement officials told reporters they have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Both Republicans and Democrats will be looking for evidence of Crooks’ political affiliation as they seek to portray the rival party as a representative of extremism.

The shooting came less than four months before the Nov. 5 election in which Trump faces a re-election bid against Democratic President Joe Biden. Most polls, including those from Reuters/Ipsos, show the two neck and neck.
