Former president stormed off the stage; 2 dead

Former President Donald Trump was forced off the stage after shots rang out while he was addressing supporters at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. His face was covered in blood, but he was quickly confirmed to be “fine.” It was later reported that he had been shot in the ear.

Another person at the rally, whose identity authorities have not released, was killed in the shooting. Another person is in serious condition.

CNN, Associated Press and other media reported that the shooting was being investigated as an attempted murder.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that the suspected gunman, whose death was confirmed by several officials, fired several shots toward the stage around 6:15 p.m. He said the gunman was in an elevated position outside the rally.

When the noises occurred, Trump grabbed his ear. Rally attendees began screaming as agents pushed Trump to the ground. When he left the stage, he had blood on his ear and cheek.

The former president was removed from the scene by the Secret Service with a raised fist following the noise. Steven Cheung, Trump’s spokesman, confirmed in a statement that the former president was “fine” but was being treated at a local medical facility.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their swift response during this heinous act,” Cheung said Saturday.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told reporters that the suspected shooter was dead.

The Secret Service removed reporters from the scene, calling it an “active crime scene.” Anthony Guglielmi, a Secret Service spokesman, issued a statement saying, “The Secret Service has put protective measures in place and the former president is safe” while officials begin their investigation.

Former President Donald Trump issued a statement on the shooting, thanking the Secret Service and law enforcement and offering condolences to the person killed at the rally.

“It is unbelievable that such an act could take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” Trump said in a statement on Truth Social.

“I was hit by a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear. I knew immediately something was wrong because I heard a whooshing sound, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet go through the skin. There was a lot of bleeding so I realized what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

“We cannot be like this. We cannot tolerate this,” says Biden

Joe Biden briefly commented on the shooting during the Trump rally, calling it “sick” and saying he hoped to speak to Trump again on Saturday night.

“There is no place for this kind of violence in America. It is sick. It is sick,” Biden told reporters in a crisis briefing room in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he is spending the weekend.

“That’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We can’t allow this to happen. We can’t be like this. We can’t tolerate this.”

Biden said he tried to reach Trump by phone but was unsuccessful. “So far, he seems to be doing well,” he said, adding that all federal agencies were coming together to thoroughly investigate the shooting. “There are some reports, but no final reports.”

“The bottom line is that the Trump rally was a rally that should have been peaceful and without any problems,” Biden said. “But the idea – the idea – that there is political violence or violence of this kind in America is just outrageous, it’s just not appropriate. Everyone, everyone needs to condemn it. Everyone.”
