Man from Karnal shot dead in New York | News from Chandigarh

A 25-year-old Haryana man, who was working in New York, was shot dead allegedly by unidentified assailants on July 12 while he was returning to his accommodation after work, his family members said on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Monu Verma, hailed from Nissing village in Karnal district, police said, adding that his family came to know about his death on the intervening night of July 12-13.

Monu’s father Pawan Kumar Verma told reporters that the family had sent Monu to New York three years ago with a loan of Rs 3.5 million through a so-called “dogkey route” service (a visa-on-arrival service used by Indian citizens to enter countries like the US and Canada illegally).

“Monu had recently got a job as a bouncer and was living with one of his friends, who informed us about the incident,” said Pawan Verma, who had no idea how to bring his son’s body home.

Monu’s family members mentioned that he first went to Portugal and stayed there for a few months before moving on to the United States.

Festive offer

“I raised Rs 3.5 crore by taking a bank loan and getting some money from a few friends and relatives to send him abroad. I am yet to repay this debt,” Pawan added.

Monu was the youngest of five siblings, including three sisters and a brother.
