Critical safety alert issued after reports of wires on local hiking trails

NORWOOD, Colorado (KKTV) – The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office and GMUG National Forests have issued a safety alert following recent reports of dangerous power lines being strung across hiking trails.

The sheriff’s office said it had received reports of lines intentionally strung across the Wilson Mesa Trail between National Forest System roads 645 and 623.

These lines can be particularly dangerous for those crossing the trail at high speed or in poor light conditions, as they can be very difficult to see.

Sheriffs plan to close the trail and set up barriers while they investigate the lines.

“We are committed to assisting the Sheriff’s Office in its investigations and educating the public about the dangers and legal consequences of such actions. We encourage all trail users to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately,” said Megan Eno, Norwood District Ranger.

Intentionally placing hazards, including wires, is a felony. Sheriffs said those responsible for placing the hazards face legal consequences including reckless endangerment, assault and other charges.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture offers tips for trail users:

  • Stay alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and watch for unusual objects or obstacles along the way.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice anything suspicious or discover wires or other hazards, immediately contact the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office at 970-728-1911 or call 911 in an emergency.
  • Travel in groups: If possible, use the hiking trails together with others, because you are safer in a group.
  • Avoid using at night: Avoid using hiking trails in low light and limited visibility conditions.

“This despicable act is a serious threat to the public safety of our community. We are conducting a thorough investigation to apprehend this loser,” said San Miguel Sheriff Bill Masters. “In the meantime, we cannot stress enough the need to remain vigilant when engaging in recreational activities in this area.”

The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office said a $1,000 reward is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the person(s) who placed the wires. Call the dispatch center at 970-728-1911 with any information on this case.
