Atlanta’s population booms again | Gwinnett 1 million residents

More than 532,000 people now live in the city of Atlanta, according to the data.

ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta is now home to 5.2 million people, after a population growth of 1.22% from April 2023 to April 2024, according to estimates released Wednesday by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

More than 532,000 people now live in the city of Atlanta, which grew about 2.1 percent over the past year. The state’s largest city welcomed new residents at a faster pace than any other county in the region, continuing last year’s trend, according to a report from the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The growth underscores the continued demand for living in urban neighborhoods close to jobs, transit and amenities.

The 11-county region added 62,700 people during the 12-month period, down slightly from the previous year’s estimate. Cherokee, Henry and Forsyth counties saw the fastest growth, while Clayton, DeKalb and Rockdale saw the slowest growth. For the first time, Gwinnett joined Fulton as the only county in the state with a population of more than 1 million.

Atlanta has already experienced a prolonged period of population decline since the 1970s, driven in part by white flight to the suburbs. For more on this demographic shift, read the full article here.
