GAMEDAY GUIDE | Revs vs. Atlanta United FC (July 3, 2024)

RECENT FORMULA AGAINST ATLANTA UNITED FC

These two teams met four months ago at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where Giorgos Giakoumakis – who has since been traded to Cruz Azul in Liga MX – scored a hat-trick in Atlanta United’s 4-1 win over the Revs. The result ended New England’s six-game unbeaten run in the series (4-0-2), although the Revs have still won three straight against Atlanta at Gillette Stadium, including a 2-1 victory last July on goals from Matt Polster and Giacomo Vrioni.

The Revs (6-11-1, 19 pts) had their four-game winning streak snapped by the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew last weekend, a result that also ended New England’s two-game home winning streak. The hosts got off to a perfect start when Ema Boateng gave them a 1-0 lead in 10 minutes, but the Crew responded with five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory. Now the Revs will look for an answer against an Atlanta team that sits just five points ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings.

Atlanta (6-8-6, 24 pts) went through a rough patch in April and May, going winless in nine games (0-5-4) and ultimately parting ways with head coach Gonzalo Pineda in early June. Assistant coach Rob Valentino — a first-round SuperDraft pick of the Revolution in 2008 — took over on an interim basis and led the Five Stripes to a four-game undefeated run (2-0-2), including a dramatic 2-1 victory over Toronto FC last weekend.

A busy week will see the Revs follow Wednesday night’s game with a cross-country trip to the Pacific Northwest for a Saturday night showdown with Seattle Sounders FC.
