Task force formed after series of violent acts and attacks in downtown Pittsburgh – WPXI

PITTSBURGH – Following recent violence and indiscriminate attacks in downtown Pittsburgh, the Director of Public Safety is establishing a task force of city and county leaders to address the situation downtown.

There’s no doubt that life downtown has changed over the years, but Pittsburgh resident Lamar Derrett believes one thing will remain the same: safety.

“I used to come here and just relax after school, and now … there’s no reason to come here anymore,” Derrett said.

In recent months, four people have been randomly attacked and beaten in downtown Pittsburgh.

Following the recent attack on a man in his 70s this week, the Director of Public Safety has created a task force aimed at preventing violent incidents.

“It’s disturbing. And as I told you, if we don’t have public safety downtown, if people can’t feel safe on their way to work, then it’s all for nothing,” said City Councilor Anthony Cogfill.

Coghill is aware of the recent violence and says there are about 55 people living permanently in the inner city who suffer from mental health issues.

“Most of them have been in prison or incarcerated for a time and then released. They get released, serve an average of four days, and then end up back on the streets,” Coghill said.

A large portion of the task force, including representatives from the Department of Human Services and health and wellness providers, is dedicated to helping people with mental illness.

The public prosecutor’s office and the district courts are also involved in these efforts.

Noticeably missing from the task force is anyone from the mayor’s office. Channel 11 asked if they were part of the task force and they said no.
