NASCAR News: Driver suspended for physical altercation with Bubba Wallace

Aric Almirola, a veteran NASCAR driver, found himself at the center of controversy after a physical altercation with fellow racer Bubba Wallace. The incident, which occurred during a routine competitive meeting between Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and 23XI Racing, had a significant impact on the driver, according to The Athletic.

The altercation occurred ahead of the highly anticipated Xfinity Series race scheduled for May 25 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Since the two are members of teams that are both supported by Toyota and have a close technical alliance, the confrontation between Almirola and Wallace was not only a personal crisis, but also a professional one that affected the dynamics within and between their teams.

JGR promptly identified Almirola as the instigator of the brawl, a decision that resulted in his immediate suspension from the upcoming race at Charlotte – a major event in which he was scheduled to drive the No. 20 car. The consequences did not end there, however; Almirola was suspended indefinitely by JGR and had to put his racing activities on hold while the team assessed the situation.

With Almirola no longer on the racing lineup, a quick adjustment was needed. Enter Ty Gibbs, the grandson of JGR owner Joe Gibbs, who took over the No. 20 car for the Charlotte race. Ty assumed the role shortly before the race. Joe Gibbs spoke about the replacement, calling it a “team decision,” which underscores the seriousness with which the team viewed the dispute.

Ty’s performance in the race was commendable, securing ninth place and setting the fastest time in qualifying, proving his ability to be a reliable backup under pressure.

Looking ahead, Almirola’s racing career with JGR is poised for a fresh start. Reports suggest his suspension could be lifted soon, and he is expected to return to the Xfinity Series on July 20 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This potential comeback marks a pivotal period for Almirola, who rejoined JGR’s Xfinity program this offseason to mentor younger drivers, 12 years after racing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series. His experience and past success in the series, including three Cup Series wins in 460 starts, underscore his significant role within the team.

The No. 20 car remains a focal point of performance and strategy for JGR under the successive leadership of Almirola, Ty Gibbs and other drivers such as Christopher Bell – who recently earned a win in an Xfinity race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Almirola’s anticipated return will be closely watched by fans, who will be eager to see how the experienced driver deals with the fallout from the altercation and puts his career back on the fast track of racing.
